  • The cosØ is described as a power factor. As the highest value of cosØ is 1, highest value of power factor would be 1. With small power factor, any electrical system depicts more current for same power. Electrical power entails penalty, if power factor is less than a lowest standard.
Function of the relay:
To recover power factor, capacitors need to fixed in ratio with power factor and load. If capacitors are more/less than needed, power factor becomes low. The power factor rectification relay works mechanically and senses the essential power factor. Consequently it uses the accurate magnitude of capacitor in the circuit as per the power factor.

Dead Band:
  • Set Power Factor = Setting of P.F. Dial ± Dead Band.
  • For example, suppose setting P.F. Dial is at 0.9 and Dead Band is 0. At P.F. 0.89, the relay will gauge low and switch on the capacitors. Again if P.F. turn into 0.91, the relay will gauge high and switch off capacitors. This procedure is known as Hunting.
